India Pushes Preventive, Decentralised Healthcare Under Prime Minister Modi’s Leadership

India’s healthcare policy is shifting toward prevention and decentralisation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Union Health Minister J P Nadda says the government’s goal is to prevent illness, strengthen local health systems, and ensure accessible, efficient healthcare services nationwide.

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh — India’s public healthcare system is undergoing a strategic shift from treatment to prevention, with the central government placing strong emphasis on decentralised health services aimed at building a disease-free society. The approach, officials say, reflects a broader transformation in how healthcare policy is being designed and delivered across the country.

Addressing an official programme in Bhopal, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda said the government’s vision extends far beyond curing illness. The primary objective, he stressed, is to ensure that citizens do not fall ill in the first place. Describing preventive healthcare as a core commitment of the administration, Nadda said public health must focus on long-term wellness rather than reactive medical intervention.

The Health Minister highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the health sector has seen a deliberate push toward decentralisation. This strategy involves empowering states and local institutions while re-examining national health policies and service delivery models. According to Nadda, the government has undertaken detailed policy-level deliberations to make healthcare systems more responsive, inclusive, and accessible to people across diverse regions.

He noted that decentralised planning allows health services to be tailored to local needs, ensuring better outreach, timely intervention, and improved access, particularly in underserved areas. By strengthening healthcare infrastructure at multiple levels, the government aims to reduce the burden on tertiary facilities while improving early detection and prevention of diseases.

Officials view this approach as a critical step toward strengthening India’s public health framework and reducing long-term healthcare costs. The emphasis on preventive care and decentralised governance is expected to play a key role in improving health outcomes and building a resilient healthcare system capable of addressing future challenges.
